    The High Level Bridge.

    An artists impression of what the High Level Bridge will look like when completed looking from the Gateshead side of the river Tyne. It is the project of Mr. Hudson of the Newcastle Berwick Railway Company Robert Stephenson is the engineer and the assistant engineer is Mr. T.E. Harrison, Messrs. Rush and Layton and Messrs. Wilson and Gibson,are contracted for the mason work for £192,500 at £97,000 for the bridge, £86,000 for the viaduct in Newcastle and £9,500 for the viaduct in Gateshead, Messrs.Hawks and Crawshay are contracted for the iron work. The length of the bridge is 1380 feet this is to be the first bridge in which the suspension and the ordinary principles of a viaduct will be combined in one structure.

    After the opening of the High Level Bridge the Low Level Bridge in the fore ground was pulled down and between 1868 and 1876 the new swing bridge was constructed

    The Bridge was strengthend and on 12 January 1923 tracks were opened over the bridge for Electric Trams.
